Rainbow
Hey there! I am sharing this short story written in Kreol and translated to English.
Feel free to reach out & comment.
- Rainbow -
“Hey Daddy, can you tell me what’s up there?”
“Where?” I replied
“Daddy!”my lil girl shouted at me. “Up there! In the sky”.
“Might be clouds…” I responded vaguely
“Hmmm…stop staring at your phone please daddy and look up to the sky”, she firmly replied.
When I stared at the sky, I could find a well-formed rainbow, arcing in the sky through the light grey clouds. It reminded me of my childhood where I would seize the early showers to go rainbow hunting. Back to this moment, I am sitting down in my garden with my little girl and enjoying that moment. She is role playing with her dolls and I am trying to be real, over my phone. She got me off my screen and the texts that are being continuously feeding my message inbox about how two adults are parting ways and pointing fingers at one and other. We agreed that all our conversations will be via text sparing our girl from endless conversations which can be verbally abusive. She is only five, but she senses what is going on around.
Her first question triggered a flow of back-to-back questions, and to be honest I am not in a mood to answer every single questioning.
“ Hey Daddy, what’s that called?”
“ A rainbow”, short answers are the best.
“ This is so wonderful, so many colours…tell me, how did it get up there?”
“ Rain + Sun equals to rainbow”
“ I don’t understand dad”
“Every single sun ray gets through the rain drops and expose the full range of white light. The water drops divides the light in all its components. Do you get it?”
“Mum always use these words, I am the light of her house. So am I full of colours?”
She smiled and I could not help but putting my phone to the ground while focusing on the conversation and trying to give her my undivided attention.
“Daddy…it can’t be rainy and sunny at the same time?” She asked with a puzzled gaze.
“It happens that the transition between the weather allows such conditions”, I replied much posed that earlier.
“You know, I truly believe that rain and sun must meet up more often. So rainbows can be seen everyday. I love rainbows and I love gazing at them with you.” she drew me close and hugged me lovingly.
I could feel her head next to my heart when she mumbled: “Love you Daddy”
“I love you so much darling, you truly are the light of our home and of our heart.”
She grinned while looking at me and switched back to the rainbow gazing. I stared at her for a while and then switched as well. Grateful, is the word that resonated in my heart at that moment,
After some time, she pulled back and gave me a serious stare.
“What happen?” I asked.
“You know, we are like this moment actually. I am the rainbow! Mum and you are the rain and the sun. Even though you are fighting some times but you are able to make wonders. And, that wonder is me! Your rainbow! So that’s why you must keep being present in my sky, because without rain and sun, there will be no rainbow. I need you both to exist.” After that she paused, coming back to the rainbow.
I was in awe and speechless. My guts, my heart and inner feelings twisted all together. I was on the verge to voice out all my feelings and explain what is truly happening in our lives, but she does not deserve this outburst of emotions. She’s got it all. Like this rainbow, she adding some beautiful colours and shades in our lives, and that is second to none.
